Team Hallam Strength and Conditioning
What is Team Hallam Strength and Conditioning?
Team Hallam Strength and Conditioning (S&C) is a sports performance programme and facility ran in collaboration between Hallam Active and Team Hallam. Its primary purpose is to offer a performance training environment for all of the Universities teams and athletes.
Team Hallam S&C currently stands as one of the largest athletic development services in the country, delivering to over 900 athletes and running sessions for over 30 teams. In fact, S&C is now part of the culture of most of the sports clubs within the University and has become embedded into the whole ethos of Team Hallam.
What are the aims?
Senior S&C Coach, Andrew Langford, who has been leading the programme for the past 3 years, says "it is all about improving the competitive nature and performance culture of our sports teams. Having worked at other universities in the UK and the USA, I saw the potential for being able to engage large numbers of University athletes, which I knew would have an impact on our sports performances. I put forward a model that would give team sessions to all our squads, including Team Hallam clubs and societies. Thankfully, the sports development and operations teams gave their full support and allowed us to push towards the team based delivery model. The idea being that we could run a sustainable membership programme that would improve the physical qualities of our athletes, helping improve sporting performances.”
What is the facility like?
Based on the facilities you would usually see at a top sporting university in America, everything is designed purposely to cater for team based and athlete delivery. There is a main team area comprising of 6 high performance Werksan racks, which can cater for up to 24 athletes at any given time. In total, there are 11 racks, 6 benches, 15 Olympic grade bars, over 1600kg of Olympic plates, as well as 1-50kg dumbbells, a cable pulley, 4 spin bikes, and many other pieces of ancillary training equipment.
Absolute Performance was the company tasked with delivering the required equipment, much of which is manufactured by Werksan; a world-class range of weight lifting equipment. One of the main features of the S&C facility is the flooring, which is a multipurpose rubber tiled floor. This can be used as platforms for weightlifting, and also for any other methods of training you desire. Its other key feature is that it is all one level, which enhances its functionality and usability.
What do teams/athletes get?
Team Hallam S&C work closely with all the sports committees and coaches to develop a comprehensive timetable that offers team sessions at times that optimally fit the training and playing schedules. All clubs and teams in the university are then assigned one of our experienced S&C coaches who will devise an annual plan to help develop the athletes and prepare for competition.
Bespoke training programmes and sessions are developed for each team to ensure that all athletes have the opportunity to develop and progress during their time at Sheffield Hallam. Athletes are tested at three key points throughout the year and are constantly monitored on their progress.
